The Mothers’ Union as part of its yearly programmes visited the Street Academy in Accra on the 29th of June, 2023.

Twenty-six (26) members of the Union arrived at the Academy at 11 am. It was pure joy as the children were very excited to see us. Mother Rose Chikwendu gave the opening prayer.

Madam Irene Lartey then welcomed the Union to the Academy and gave a brief background about it. She said it aimed to educate children in the James town vicinity and its environs who had no opportunity to formal education in subjects such as Maths, English, Science, Religious and Moral Education (RME) for 3 years after which they are enrolled in the formal education. She hinted that in the past, the Academy relied heavily on benevolent individuals and groups such as the Mothers Union for all its operations but was delighted to add that the Academy now receives some grants from the World Bank which helps in the smooth running of its operations. Nonetheless, visits like these by the Union go a long way in ensuring that all their needs are adequately catered for.

Mother President Wilhelmina Graves informed all present that the Union was there as part of its yearly obligations to make some donation. These included bags of rice, cooking oil, biscuits, drinks, exercise books, pens, and pencils just to mention a few.

After the donation, there was an active session of educating and advising the children. Mother Hilda Commey touched on LGBT and advised the children not to engage in such acts as it was contrary to the word of God.

Mother Vivian Adadey, Mother Deborah Allotey and Mother Grace Tetteh touched on cleanliness and neatness beginning from the crowns of their heads to the soles of their feet.

Mother Rose Chikwendu and Mother Eunice Dos-Reis talked to them about skin bleaching and its adverse effects on the body.

Mother Vivian Adadey again talked to the children about rape and its attendant problems as well as ways to prevent it.

Finally, Mother Christiana Bulley taught them a poem.

Indeed it was a very interesting and exciting visit as the children were very active and responsive during these sessions.

Madam Irene Lartey thanked the Union for the visit and prayed God’s blessings upon each one.

Members departed at noon.
